Essential Kuranda: Skyrail and Scenic Train Tour

Want to travel in style and comfort? The Kuranda Skyrail and Train tour is undoubtedly an adventure for you. Experience some of the region’s iconic trademarks: the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, the Kuranda Scenic Railway, and the idyllic Kuranda village.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Begin your journey from Cairns to Kuranda on the iconic Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. As you ascend the mountainside, enjoy stunning views out to the ocean while gazing across the expansive UNESCO-listed Wet Tropics Rainforest canopy.

The Skyrail stretches across the Kuranda range for 7.5km, with two mid-stations, Red Peak and Barron Falls, providing plenty of exploration opportunities. Follow scenic walks to lookouts over the rainforest and join ranger-guided tours to learn about the local flora and fauna. Don’t miss the CSIRO Interpretation station for more in-depth information.

One of the highlights of this Essential Kuranda tour is ‘The Edge’ lookout. It sits right above the thunderous Barron Falls, also known as Din Din, and the views are breathtaking. These sacred falls have been central to storytelling for the Djabugay people for thousands of years.

We recommend allowing 1.5 hours for this Skyrail experience to appreciate Red Peak and Barron Falls stations fully.

Kuranda Village

Upon arriving in Kuranda, you’ll immediately understand why it’s known as ‘the village in the rainforest.’ This charming village, surrounded by lush tropical rainforests, has been a favourite of visitors since the early 1900s. In the 1960s, Kuranda became famous for its unique climate and lifestyle, attracting vibrant characters, quirky shops, musicians, and artists.

The Original Kuranda Markets are a must-visit. They offer various arts and crafts, unique souvenirs, homemade jerky, and chilli. You can also browse local produce, fashion, hand-crafted jewellery, leather products, woodwork, and gemstones.

With so many options, you’re bound to work up an appetite. The village has boutique restaurants and cafes, some hidden among the markets. Try delicious bush tucker or feast on a German sausage at the German Tucker Wursthouse—don’t miss the Käseknacker!

Kuranda is not just about markets and food. It offers many wildlife encounters. Visit the Butterfly Sanctuary, home to Australia’s largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit. At Birdworld, we interact with over 60 native and beautiful birds, including a cassowary. Don’t forget the Koala Gardens, where you can learn more about Australia’s unique animals, including koalas, kangaroos, and wombats.

Scenic Railway

As your day draws closer, board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for a memorable journey home. The Kuranda Railway began in the 1880s to support tin miners in Herberton, west of Cairns. The railway’s construction was a massive feat, involving the creation of 15 handmade tunnels and 37 bridges, and many lives were lost during this period.

The railway opened to passenger travel in June 1891, and by the 1930s, Kuranda had become a hit with tourists. To this day, visitors continue to enjoy the old-world charm of the experience.

On your journey back to Cairns, marvel at the views of the World Heritage-listed rainforest. Look down the steep mountainside drops where waterfalls cascade into creeks and pools. Complete your journey in the refurbished original heritage carriages, or upgrade your ticket to the Gold Class Carriage for a more luxurious experience. This is one of Australia’s most scenic railway trips and the perfect way to experience the Kuranda Skyrail and Train tour.
