Skyrail Rainforest Cableway — Above The World’s Oldest Living Rainforest
There are few experiences in Australia that match what Skyrail offers — not just in what you see, but in where it places you. The gondola travels 7.5 kilometres from Smithfield on the edge of Cairns to the village of Kuranda, crossing above an unbroken canopy of World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest the entire way. Below: green in every possible shade. Ahead: the Atherton Tablelands rising into cloud. Behind: the Coral Sea, flat and blue and impossibly large.
It is one of those experiences where you run out of things to say because looking becomes enough.
Two Mid-Stations — Step Off And Step In
The Skyrail is not simply a means of getting from Cairns to Kuranda. It is a journey through three different layers of the rainforest experience, and the two mid-stations are where the real depth of it reveals itself.
At Red Peak Station, the gondola descends to rainforest level and you step onto a 175-metre boardwalk through the understorey. Towering trees, ancient ferns, Boyd’s Forest Dragons motionless on bark, and the sounds of a forest that has never been silent. A Skyrail Ranger is stationed here for guided tours that change the way you understand everything around you.
At Barron Falls Station, the gorge opens and the scale changes entirely. The Barron River cuts through basalt cliffs below, and the falls themselves — dropping 125 metres in dramatic tiers — can be seen from multiple viewing platforms reached via accessible boardwalks. In the wet season, the power of the falls from this vantage point is extraordinary.
The Gondola — Six Minutes Of Canopy Silence
Each gondola carries between six and eight people in glass-walled cabins. The descent and ascent between stations takes approximately six minutes per leg, and in that time most passengers fall quiet. The view demands it. The rainforest from above is a different thing entirely to the rainforest from within — vast, layered, ancient, the canopy a living mosaic of a thousand greens.
On clear days, both the Coral Sea and the mountains of the Atherton Tablelands are visible simultaneously. There are not many places in Australia where you can see the reef and the rainforest from the same spot.
Combining Skyrail With The Scenic Railway
Most visitors to Kuranda do both: the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail. The train travels through the gorge and tunnels, the cableway travels above the canopy — together they give you a complete picture of the landscape from two entirely different perspectives. Come up by train, go back by gondola. Or the reverse. Either way, you will understand something about Barron Gorge by the end of the day that no photograph can quite convey.
Practical Information For Your Visit
The Skyrail departs from Smithfield, approximately 15 minutes north of Cairns CBD — free parking is available at the terminal. The journey from Smithfield to Kuranda takes approximately 90 minutes including station stops, though most visitors spend considerably more time at the stations themselves.
Book tickets in advance, especially during peak season and school holidays. Gondolas run throughout the day, and the last departure times are worth checking before you plan your return journey.
