Kuranda is small enough to walk in an afternoon, but rich enough to fill a lifetime. This collection of maps is designed to help you move through the village with ease — from the moment you arrive at the railway station or Skyrail terminal, to the moment you realise you’ve been here for hours and haven’t seen everything yet.
Your Kuranda Village Map
The village centre is compact and walkable. The main street runs from the Kuranda Scenic Railway station at one end to the Skyrail terminal at the other, with the markets, wildlife parks, cafés, galleries and gardens clustered in between. The Barron River forms a natural boundary to the east, and the rainforest presses in on every side.
Key Landmarks To Find
Kuranda Scenic Railway Station — The heritage-listed station at the eastern edge of the village. Arrive here by train from Cairns and you step directly into the heart of Kuranda.
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Terminal — Located a short walk from the main street. This is where the gondola journey above the canopy begins or ends, depending on which direction you’re travelling.
Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets — Open from the early morning, these markets have been here since 1978. Run by the artists and growers who live in the village, they are the soul of Kuranda commerce.
Kuranda Heritage Markets — A larger market complex in the centre of the village, with a wide range of souvenirs, food stalls and local produce.
Australian Butterfly Sanctuary — Located on Rob Veivers Drive, this is the largest butterfly aviary in Australia. The entrance is well-signed from the main street.
Birdworld Kuranda — Next door to the Butterfly Sanctuary. Over 60 species of birds in a free-flight aviary.
Kuranda Koala Gardens — A wildlife sanctuary on the same precinct as the Butterfly Sanctuary and Birdworld. Koala cuddles, wallabies and freshwater crocodiles.
Barron Falls Lookout — A 20-minute walk from the village through the rainforest. One of the most spectacular viewpoints in North Queensland, particularly in the wet season when the falls are in full force.
Getting Around Kuranda
The village is best explored on foot. Most of what you want to see is within a 10 to 15-minute walk of the train station. If you arrive by Skyrail, the terminal drops you just a few minutes from the markets and the wildlife attractions.
For those visiting Rainforestation Nature Park or Kur-Cow Barnwell Farm, you’ll need transport — both attractions are a short drive from the village centre.
There is free parking available on the outskirts of the village for those who drive up from Cairns via the Kennedy Highway.
